âDid I overreact last night?â Jason asked, wedged into one corner of the sofa.
Sam pushed his pursed lips from side to side. âMaybe. I donât know. Although, I could have been out of line. But itâs in the past. Can we just leave it there?â
âSure.â Jason tucked his leg under his body. âYou think Em will be surprised?â
Sam, seated on the other end of the sofa, surveyed the room. It took them five hours, but the living room floor and coffee table were clear, and the kitchen backsplash was grime-free and white again. They cleaned the bathroom and it was âuseable,â but really it needed a gut job. Better still, the burning candle on the dining room table emanated a citrus aroma that replaced the stomach-turning stench of cat box, stale smoke and rancid cheese. âYes. And sheâll be disappointed.â
âDisappointed?â
âThat she wasnât the one to âfixâ you,â Sam teased.
âSometimes youâre a real ass. You know that, right?â
Sam flicked his eyebrows. âI have my moments.â The way Jasonâs juicy lips moved when he spoke had him craving another French kiss. But they were just friends, right? Leaving last night in the past was his idea. And usually he played by the rules. Like with his career. He obtained his undergraduate degree, then his masterâs and after that his doctorate. Wrote scholarly articles, attended conferences, and taught even though he still had to take two Imodium tablets an hour before every lecture. Following the rules, a few early retirements and a bit of luck earned him tenure when he was thirty-one. Now he was tired of playing it safe. He crawled across the sofa, cupped his hand to the back of Jasonâs head and pulled him in until their lips met.
Neither of them moved, and Jason barely reacted. Sam didnât pull away, just dragged his hand down to those well-set shoulders and then over the clothed body to the crotch. Jason throbbed. And when Sam squeezed, he moaned when Jasonâs tongue slipped into his mouth. Finally a rhythm, their mouths locked and teeth clinking against each other. Sam grabbed the bottom of Jasonâs T-shirt and pulled. A bit of a struggle, but it was out, and his hands glided over that smooth torso. Jason pulled away, smiling coyly, and raised his arms. Sam peeled off the shirt and leaned in for another kiss when a key jiggled in the lock.
Sam flung himself back into the corner of the sofa heâd previously occupied. He couldnât take his eyes off those pink nipples as Jason snatched the T-shirt off the floor and pulled it on.
Jason smoothed out his hair and sunk back onto the sofa. âSo, weâre just friends?â
Before Sam could answer, Emmaâs plummy voice ricocheted through the apartment. Then she appeared in the living room entryway, Eric right behind her. Her mouth dropped open, her gaze travelling around the room. Some noise escaped from her throat, but it was indecipherable.
âYou okay, Emma?â Sam asked, smirking.
Emma blinked rapidly. âWhat happened here?â
âI decided to clean up a bit.
